A Carbon Valley town along I-25

Firestone is a statutory town in southwest Weld County, incorporated in 1908, with 16,381 residents in the 2020 Census. It lies about 28 miles from downtown Denver in a straight line, and Longmont is the nearest larger city. With Frederick and Dacono it forms the Carbon Valley. Most of the town is newer family subdivisions served by I-25, State Highways 119 and 66 and Firestone Boulevard, and the 12-mile Firestone/Legacy Trail follows a former coal railroad right-of-way through more than 35 parks.

Where Firestone's water comes from

The Town of Firestone runs the pipes but has no treatment plant. It buys treated water from Central Weld County Water District, which draws surface water from Carter Lake (with Dry Creek Reservoir) and treats it at the Carter Lake Filter Plant, and from the St. Vrain Water Authority's Gould Well. The water is disinfected with chlorine. Central Weld reports its water as soft. The Town's service line inventory lists no known lead lines.

One neighborhood is different: homes in Barefoot Lakes get water from Little Thompson Water District, and the Town only handles stormwater there. Everywhere else, Town Utility Billing is at 303-833-3291, and the Town keeps a separate after-hours and weekend water emergency line at 720-652-4222.

Sewer through St. Vrain Sanitation District

St. Vrain Sanitation District serves Firestone along with Frederick, Dacono, parts of Mead and nearby unincorporated Weld County. The district treats the building sewer, the pipe from the house to its main, as the property owner's line. The district keeps a 24-hour line for sewer backups at (303) 776-9570, which is worth calling first so you know whether the blockage is in the district main or on your side.

Permits and backflow

Permits come from the Town of Firestone Building Division at 9950 Park Avenue ([email protected]). Its fee schedule lists a permit for replacing a residential tank-style water heater, gas or electric, and a tankless unit that needs new gas piping goes through plan review first. The same schedule lists residential and commercial backflow preventer permits. The Town runs a backflow and cross-connection program to meet the state rule, but the Town pages we read did not give a testing interval for homes, so ask the Building Division what your irrigation assembly needs.

Gas: Black Hills Energy

Firestone gets natural gas from Black Hills Energy, not Xcel. If you smell gas, get out of the house, then call 911 and Black Hills Energy from outside; the utility's number is on your gas bill.

Firestone versus Denver

A Denver homeowner has Denver Water, Denver's sewer utility and Xcel. In Firestone it is Town-distributed water (or Little Thompson in Barefoot Lakes), St. Vrain Sanitation District and Black Hills Energy, with the Town Building Division for permits. Newer homes still freeze when it gets cold enough, especially sprinkler lines and outdoor faucets. Call the number on this page, describe the problem and whether the water is shut off, and you will be connected with an independent plumber who works in Firestone. Pricing is between you and that plumber.

Common questions in Firestone

Does Firestone treat its own water?
No. The Town distributes treated water bought from Central Weld County Water District, which treats Carter Lake water, and from the St. Vrain Water Authority. It is disinfected with chlorine.
Who provides water in Barefoot Lakes?
Little Thompson Water District serves Barefoot Lakes homes; the Town of Firestone handles only stormwater in that neighborhood.
Who do I call for a sewer backup in Firestone?
St. Vrain Sanitation District staffs a 24-hour line at (303) 776-9570. The district considers the sewer line from the house to its main the owner's responsibility, so repairs on that line go to a plumber.
Does a water heater replacement in Firestone need a permit?
Yes. The Building Division lists a permit for residential tank-style water heater replacement, and a tankless heater with new gas piping requires plan review.
