During a Centennial plumbing emergency, close the house main, and if there's a gas smell, leave and call 911 and Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-2999. Then call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Centennial.

Centennial does not run its own water system
Centennial was formed in 2001 from unincorporated Arapahoe County, and water and sewer here come from a set of separate districts rather than the city. Much of the water arrives through Denver Water distributors. The city's maps list Southgate Water District, Willows Water District, Arapahoe County Water and Wastewater Authority, East Cherry Creek Valley, Inverness and others for water, and Southgate Sanitation, South Arapahoe Sanitation and several more for sewer. Your water bill names your district, and that is who to call about the street side.
Rules about service lines differ by district. In Southgate's area, for example, the property owner is responsible for the service line on the owner side of the curb stop, owns the meter and is responsible for the meter pit, and Southgate handles water breaks and sewer backups on its own system at 303-779-0261. Willows Water District can be reached at (303) 770-8625.
Who handles what
| Situation | First call |
|---|---|
| Water main break in the street | Your water district |
| Leak on your side of the curb stop | A plumber (in Southgate's area this is the owner's line) |
| Burst pipe, leaking heater or broken valve inside | A plumber |
| Sewage backing up in your house only | A plumber, then your sanitation district if the main is involved |
| Gas odor | Leave; 911 and Xcel Energy |
Signs that need a same-day call
- Water running out from under a cabinet, door or ceiling
- Sewage odor with water rising in a floor drain
- A water heater leaking or making loud popping noises before failing
- A sudden loss of water to the whole house
- A pipe that froze overnight and is now dripping as it thaws
A dripping faucet or a toilet that runs now and then can wait for a regular appointment.
Seasonal and timing notes
Centennial's rolling terrain and hard winter freezes put hose bibs and pipes in exterior walls at risk on the coldest nights, and sprinkler lines that were not blown out can split. Night and weekend visits usually cost more than weekday work. The City of Centennial Building Division requires a permit for any work on plumbing or gas systems, so a replacement part may add an inspection after the emergency is handled. No arrival time is promised.
